An Infinite Room. An Endless Calm.

01

BRIEF

To bring iconic paintings to life as far as the eye can see.

For the launch of Tokyo Dream Park, the latest major entertainment complex in Tokyo, Culture Spaces invited us to re-imagine classic paintings to take the audience on a serene journey: from day to dusk, in an infinite mirrored room. Crafting a three minute looping experience we created bespoke animations and sensitive extensions to these classic artworks to bring them to life in new ways to create a calm and meditative space.

CONCEPTS

AI Studies

We began with initial experimentations and studies through custom AI workflows to drive the motion in each painting to maintain the structure of the brushstrokes while adding dynamic movements across the canvas that felt natural to each setting. Using AI allowed us to quickly experiment and lock in the approach and look with the client.

MAKING

Respecting. Reflecting. Replaying.

Our first task was to take each of the three classics from Vallaton, Van Gogh and Monet and widen each of them to fit the design of the room and to be able to mirror and loop infinitely without repetition. Playing close attention to not disrupt the overall feeling of each painting, we adjusted the horizon line to be consistent with each other to allow a more seamless experience and through a combination of AI and custom manual brushwork were able to more faithfully extend each artwork while retaining each’s distinctive styles. Breaking each artwork into layers, we then brought each artwork to life with custom animations with AI to give the effect of the painting continuing indefinitely.

VAN GOGH

Extending the paintings so they could mirror and loop endlessly, without losing a single brushstroke of each artist's style, was the real challenge here. The new AI tools and workflows let us iterate faster than ever before, and pairing them with our real-time Unreal Engine pipeline meant we could review with the client at every stage. The result is a space that stays faithful to the originals while feeling genuinely alive.

RESULTS

An oasis of calm.

We partnered with our long time audio partners, Echoic, to create a soothing soundscape. Slow, steady nature sounds that loop seamlessly alongside the visuals so that the viewer is never disturbed during their time within the room, able to stay and relax as long as they would like. Transporting viewers to an oasis of calm.
