Brief
Building a world through character-driven storytelling.
Commissioned by Phoenix Labs, the creative team was tasked with creating a series of seven stylised cinematics for Everhaven, a multiplayer sandbox action-adventure game rich in mythology, mystery and character-driven storytelling. Each film explored the origins and motivations of a different hero, revealing the personal histories, relationships and defining moments that shaped their place within the wider world. Developed in a bespoke 2.5D visual style, the project combined the depth and flexibility of a 3D pipeline with the charm and artistry of illustrated storytelling. Working closely with the game’s creators, the team crafted a unique approach to each cinematic while remaining faithful to the visual language, lore and worldbuilding that made Everhaven such a compelling universe to explore.
Making
A bespoke visual language for every hero.
One of the key creative challenges was ensuring that each film felt distinct while still belonging to a cohesive universe. Rather than applying a single template across all seven cinematics, the team developed bespoke visual and narrative approaches for each character, carefully considering tone, pacing, composition and colour to reflect their individual personalities and histories. This allowed every story to stand on its own while contributing to the broader mythology of the world.
From a production perspective, the project utilised a hybrid 2.5D workflow that combined the flexibility of a full 3D pipeline with the handcrafted feel of illustration. Characters, environments and camera moves were developed in 3D, providing the freedom to create cinematic compositions and dynamic movement, while extensive paint-over work, lighting treatments and compositing techniques helped achieve the final storybook aesthetic. Particular attention was given to atmosphere, depth and environmental storytelling, ensuring that every frame felt rich with history and detail. The result was a scalable pipeline that allowed the team to deliver multiple films efficiently while maintaining a high level of visual craftsmanship throughout the series.
Result
A showcase of character, craft and worldbuilding.
The series became an opportunity to demonstrate how thoughtful storytelling and strong visual design can enrich a game’s universe beyond the core gameplay experience. By focusing on character, emotion and mythology, the films helped define the tone and identity of the world, creating a deeper sense of place and purpose around the franchise. The project also allowed the studio to explore a highly stylised approach to cinematic storytelling, pushing the boundaries of what could be achieved within a game marketing context.
Perhaps most importantly, the work stands as a celebration of the creative ambition behind the project. From the richness of the worldbuilding to the individuality of each character’s journey, the films encapsulated the passion and craftsmanship invested by everyone involved. They remain a strong example of how animation can elevate narrative, strengthen intellectual property and leave a lasting impression long after the final frame.
Collaborating with Revenant on Everhaven was a pleasure from start to finish. They took on an ambitious task of producing seven distinct hero cinematics in a unified 2.5D style and became more than just a supplier - they were a true collaborative partner. The Revenant team rose to the challenge with passion and precision. The resulting cutscenes captured the soul of Everhaven - rich, cinematic, and full of character. It was a genuine pleasure working with such a talented and dedicated team. Do yourself a favour and work with these people.
